This home features a vegetated roof, 2.4 kW grid-tied solar photovoltaic system, pre-plumbed solar hot water system, radiant floor heating on the first floor, heat recovery ventilator, open cell and closed cell spray foam insulation with additional rigid insulation, FSC decking, Hardiplank & cedar siding, bamboo flooring, Caezarstone quartz countertops, Watersense certified fixtures and toilets, drywells for stormwater run-off, high efficiency lighting, and low VOC paints. The home was designed by Zero Energy Design and built by Cape Associates and was featured in the 2009 National Solar Tour.

The home uses strategically positioned windows to capture the outdoor environment, take advantage of passive solar heating and lighting, and reveal the water views of the lot. This is all accomplished even though the primary views of the home are to the west, and not to the south. This lakefront home replaces the original modern-style house built on the site in the 1960's, yet brings the energy performance up to today's highest standards. A portion of the house has a living green roof, which provides additional insulation and energy savings, and reduces run-off from storms.

A separate elevated roof deck helps attain greater water views of the lake 100 feet away, while canvas awnings protect people lounging there during periods of hot sun. On the ground level, another deck provides safe step-down decking as stairs, which can also be used as seating for family events with no railings to block the views. The interior has an open living, cook, and dining space, together with a yoga and art area, three bedrooms, a shaded first floor porch area, and a second floor roof deck.

The 2,600 square-foot home is targeting LEED Gold certification and was Energy Star certified. The English Residence scored a 39 on the HERS Index – a high energy efficiency score. Construction by Cape Associates.
