Project

Six Senses Ecological Children's Den (Thailand)

Credits: ©2010 Six Senses

24H-architecture designed the Children's Activity and Learning Centre as part of the Six Senses Soneva Kiri hotel resort on Koh Kood, an island in the Gulf of Thailand. Known as "The Den" this unique organic structure provides a fun place for visiting children to engage in a wide range of entertaining activities as well as raise their ecological awareness. This project was conceptualized by kids for kids, and then made to work by the creative architects. The Six Senses’ Soneva Kiri team invited groups of children to devise their dream play area, and the Kid’s Den includes the best of their ideas. The uniquely-designed building appears as a gigantic manta-ray hovering above the forest. Being perched in an elevated position it also offers magnificent views. The Den features some of the world’s most creative experiences for kids, guided by professional supervision, plus the latest entertainment consoles. In the true spirit of a dedicated realm for youngsters, adults are invited aboard by kids, who have their personal access codes to a draw bridge. The structure is constructed from renewable materials such as timber and bamboo.

This Den provides kids with creative and ecological education while playing, equipped with an auditorium/cinema for films, lectures and plays, a library with books on permaculture and local traditions, and rooms for art, music and fashion. The Den is located at a rocky slope close to the sea, with its Manta-ray inspired bamboo dome perched in an elevated position that offers magnificent views. The structure and roof are made from local Thai bamboo, thus contributing further to the ecological approach of the resort. The interior is made from local plantation River Red Gum wood and rattan structural elements for the inner domes.

The design features a bioclimatic approach that suits its humid tropical environment. The roof cantilevers up to 8m acting like a giant umbrella providing shade and protection from the heavy rains. The open design with the translucent elevated rooftop and setback floors allow a natural airflow inside and the use of natural daylight, limiting the building’s energy consumption.

Next to the Den, the site provides a sleeping pod for toddlers, and a toilet building as well as a cooking cave with vegetable garden for the children to prepare their own lunch with a special cook.
