Solaris Conceptualizes New Beach Umbrella

Credits: ©2011 Jose Vicente

The Solaris Sun Shade is a solar-powered umbrella concept that provides shade while powering a laptop and other gadgets - using solar energy to create new work and leisure spaces with the sun. Designed by José Vicente, the system is equipped with photovoltaic panels that allow users to charge their electronics with clean, renewable energy from the sun while sitting at a beach, park or outdoor cafe. Solaris Sun Shade has six movable petals, each with two photovoltaic panels that revolve around a central column. When opened, the wings work as a sunshade, with photovoltaic cells that charge a set of batteries in the base. An LED display power indicator is located in the central pole. Three electrical sockets are available in the base for charging portable computers, cell phones or other small electronic devices. A silicone shock absorbing colored strip at the base protects the structure and creates an electrical neutral area with a handle for transportation. Solaris sun shade was chosen as one of the finalists in the International Design Competition “Feel the Planet Earth.”
