In both media, the addition of large quantities of mineral nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorous, results in generally undesirable shifts in the number of species in ecosystems and a reduction in ecological diversity. In water, it tends to increase algae growth, which can lead to lack of oxygen and therefore death of species like fish. (measured in g N equivalents)
