Greenwash

Definition 1: Describes the deceptive use of green PR or green marketing to promote a misleading perception that a company's policies or products (such as goods or services) are environmentally friendly.

Definition 2: The term greenwashing was coined by New York environmentalist Jay Westerveld in a 1986 essay regarding the hotel industry's practice of placing placards in each room promoting reuse of towels ostensibly to "save the environment".

Definition 3: Greenwashing is the unjustified appropriation of environmental virtue by a company, an industry, a government, a politician or even a non-government organization to create a pro-environmental image, sell a product or a policy, or to try and rehabilitate their standing with the public and decision makers after being embroiled in controversy.
