The energy yield of a photovoltaic facade depends on careful planning. Modules in solar facades can show different orientations. Shading can reduce the generator performance. Thermal issues must be considered because the facade integrated modules operate at higher temperatures than conventionally installed modules. The construction of a solar facade requires a good interface between civil and electrical engineering. To support the planning engineer the computer program PVcad was developed which calculates fast the energy yield of a photovoltaic facade taking inhomogeneous irradiation, shading and thermal properties of the modules into account. PVcad can be integrated into state of the art civil and electrical engineering CAD systems. Extensive databases for weather data and component characteristics give further support to the user.
